Concrete paver molds work under heavy abrasion. Aggregate, vibration, pigment, cement paste, and repeated demoulding slowly wear cavity edges and surface details. If wear is ignored, the block machine may still run, but pavers lose sharpness, size consistency, and surface quality.

Why paver molds wear

Pavers often use dense mixes and strong vibration. The interlocking paver mould must resist abrasion at corners, sidewalls, and surface detail areas. If the aggregate is sharp or poorly graded, wear becomes faster. If operators use excessive vibration to compensate for poor mix design, mold wear also increases.

Mold wear usually appears as rounded corners, larger dimensions, rough release, surface scratches, and increased product variation. The factory may then use more water or pressure, which can make other defects worse.

Material and mix factors

Control aggregate grading and avoid oversized particles that scrape the mold heavily. The batching machine should dose materials accurately, while the concrete mixer should distribute water and cement evenly. A stable mix flows into the mold more smoothly and reduces harsh cavity friction.

For face-mix pavers, pigment and fine aggregate should be controlled carefully. Poor moisture or uneven feeding can force operators to change vibration settings, increasing wear on the mold and tamper head.

Operation and cleaning

Keep the mold clean. Hardened concrete inside corners can act like an abrasive tool in the next cycle. Clean before material hardens, but avoid damaging the mold surface. Check the GMT pallet surface too, because uneven support can affect demoulding and lower edge wear.

Do not use excessive vibration or pressure as a routine shortcut. Inspection and repair

Record mold production time, product type, visible wear, corner rounding, and demoulding behavior. Measure product dimensions regularly. If the mold is used on a high-output block making machine line, inspection should be scheduled, not delayed until products fail.

Plants using an automatic pallet provider and offline palletizing system should also check whether handling damage is being mistaken for mold wear. Good inspection separates forming defects from downstream defects.
